Itri is a charming medieval town in the Lazio region of Italy, strategically located between the mountains and the sea along the historic Appian Way. It is famous for its imposing castle, its connection to the legendary outlaw "Fra Diavolo," and its world-renowned olives.
History & Description
Strategic Location: Itri's name likely derives from the Latin Iter (way/route), as it sits in a narrow pass of the Aurunci Mountains. This location made it a vital military and trade post for over 2,000 years.
The Medieval Castle: Dominating the town is the Castello di Itri, built between the 9th and 11th centuries. It features a unique "crocodile" tower and offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley.
Fra Diavolo: Itri is the birthplace of Michele Pezza (1771–1806), known as Fra Diavolo. He was a famous brigand and later a colonel in the Bourbon army who fought against Napoleon's French occupation.
Wartime Resilience: During WWII, roughly 75% of the town was destroyed by bombing, but much of its medieval core has since been restored.
Typical Foods
Itri Olives (Olive di Gaeta): These are the town's most famous export. Known internationally as "Gaeta Olives," they are actually grown in Itri. They are small, purplish, and used both for eating (pickled) and for producing high-quality, fragrant olive oil.
Salsiccia Itrana: A local sausage often seasoned with coriander and chili pepper, typical of the Aurunci region.
Zeppole di San Giuseppe: Sweet custard-filled fritters traditionally prepared for the Feast of St. Joseph.
Monti Cecubi Wine: The area produces historically significant wines, most notably the Cecubo, which was highly praised by ancient Roman poets like Horace.
Festivals & Events
L’Infiorata (The Flower Festival): During the Corpus Domini feast (May/June), the streets are covered in elaborate, colorful "carpets" made entirely of flower petals, depicting religious and artistic scenes.
Feast of San Giuseppe (March 19th): The town celebrates its patron saint with massive bonfires (i fuochi) in every neighborhood and the preparation of traditional zeppole.
Madonna della Civita (July 21st): The most important religious event in Itri. Pilgrims climb to the mountaintop sanctuary to honor the sacred image of the Virgin Mary, believed to have been painted by St. Luke.
Nature & Activities
Monti Aurunci Regional Park: Itri is a gateway to this rugged park. It offers extensive hiking and mountain biking trails with dramatic views that stretch from the snow-capped Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Santuario della Madonna della Civita: Located 12km from the town center on Mount Fusco, this sanctuary is a major pilgrimage site and a prime spot for taking in 360-degree views of the Gulf of Gaeta.
The Ancient Appian Way: You can walk along well-preserved stretches of the original Roman paving stones (the basolato) in the Gola di Sant’Andrea, an area Charles Dickens once described as a "noble mountain pass."
Nearby Beaches: Though inland, Itri is only a 15–20 minute drive from the stunning white-sand beaches and sea caves of Sperlonga and the coastal charm of Gaeta.
WoodPark: An adventure park set in the woods near Itri, popular for families and groups looking for zip-lining and rope courses.
